“Netflix and Chill” is about to take on a whole ‘nother meaning. Hit the liquor store, stock your pantry and prepare yourself for September. No, I’m not talking about the impending hurricane season. I’m referring to the arrival of all Disney films -- including Lucasfilm, Pixar and Marvel titles -- on Netflix. With a subscription you can now stream the likes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Captain America: Civil War and Inside Out whenever you want.
This game-changing agreement has been in the works since 2012 , but a post on Netflix’s official blog has confirmed the September release date. “From September onwards, Netflix will become the exclusive US pay TV home of the latest films from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar,” wrote Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.
Netflix will release the Disney films during the same time frame that cable networks such as HBO, Starz and Showtime typically would. Not only is that a quick turnover, but Disney’s exclusivity agreement means that none of those same networks have first dibs on broadcasting Disney’s latest films. Amazon Prime, Hulu and other streaming services are barred from Disney’s newer content, as well.
The Disney deal is a major coup for Netflix and further establishes the company as the go-to provider for streamed entertainment. It better be worth it -- Netflix is reportedly paying hundreds of million dollars PER YEAR to get in bed with the mouse.
