Have you forgotten about Star Wars yet? Deadpool is currently destroying the box office, while other heavyweights like Captain America: Civil War, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad are set to hit theaters as the weather warms. But waiting at the end of 2016 comes the most-anticipated movie of the year, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It’s the first spin-off film in Star Wars history, and expectations are running quite high.
Though Rogue One premieres in less than a year, we still have not seen any footage from the upcoming film. We’ll have to rely on rumors and speculations until the first trailer appears online. But there can be trusted sources in this time of uncertainty - the actors themselves. Mads Mikkelsen, who is set to have a significant role in Rogue One, recently spoke to Denmark news site (h/t ComicBook.com) about his character in the new Star Wars. Quite simply, he said:
“No, my character is actually not a bad guy. And I cannot say any more.”
Fair enough, Mr. Mikkelsen, but you’ll have to excuse us for being curious. It’s an interesting statement from the Danish actor because he nearly ALWAYS plays the bad guy. Most recently he starred Dr. Hannibal Lecter in NBC’s Hannibal.
His claim, however, does line up with a previous report from the usually dependable Making Star Wars. The site claims to have information on Mikkelsen’s character, who they describe as the chief Imperial scientist responsible for getting the completed Death Star functional. As the film progresses, it turns out that he begins to feel guilty for developing a superweapon capable of inflicting mass destruction. Ultimately, Mikkelsen’s character will decide to switch sides. Here’s what Making Star Wars has to say about it:
“Mads Mikkelsen (Galen appears to be his name in the film) is kind of the key to the film in a way. He is a scientist that took over the Geonosian Death Star project. He solved several of the flaws the Empire could not and is sort of a revered person in the Empire for his contributions. However, Mikkelsen’s character is a Robert Oppenheimer-type character. Oppenheimer helped design the atomic bomb only to say, “Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” The guilt “Galen” feels for his contributions to the Empire become too much and he defects, attempting to make things right. In order to do this, he enlists the help of his only daughter….”
Who is Galen’s only daughter? Naturally, it’s the main lead in the film – Felicity Jones’ character. She is the leader of a band of rebel spies (and possibly bounty hunters) who sets off to destroy her father’s greatest work. This would serve as a nice personal touch added to an otherwise basic conflict of stealing the Death Star plans.
