Young Han Solo is about to be cast for his “solo” spin-off film (see what I did there?). The latest Star Wars anthology rumors are a welcome distraction following the disappointment of a Super Bowl teaser that went unpromised. Super Bowl 50 came and went without any reveal of the upcoming Star Wars anthology movie, Rogue One. Cinema fans were certainly hoping for an introductory peek of the first-ever Star Wars spin-off movie, but alas, it was not to be.
Now, those who have seen The Force Awakens know that [SPOILER] Han Solo dies at the hand of his villainous son, Kylo Ren. Unfortunately that means that our beloved smuggler’s story stops there in the current Skywalker saga (though he could appear again as a Force ghost?), but Disney has plans on leaping back in time and exploring the life and development of Han Solo as a youngin’. The spin-off will be the second of the Star Wars anthology films, following Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which explores a group of rebels attempting to steal plans for the original Death Star.
Naturally, Disney has begun an extensive casting process to fill the void left by the great Harrison Ford. Thousands of actors have auditioned for one of Hollywood’s most coveted roles, which includes the likes of Miles Teller, Dave Franco and more. However, if the rumors are true, Disney has turned its attention to a pair of lesser known stars.
According to Star Wars News Net (h/t Screen Rant), Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) are zeroing in on the role of Young Han Solo. Both have allegedly completed multiple auditions - including ones together - for the part. Is it down to these two young men? And if so, is Disney pitting the pair against each other or considering them for different parts? We can only imagine…
Both actors are highly regarded and certainly fit the mold for a potential franchise star. Egerton has already been eyed by Star Wars fans as a potential heir to the throne, whereas Ehrenreich is coming off of a well received performance and the Coen brothers latest satire.
Of course, these are simply rumors for now, but definitely believable ones at the very least. We should find out some more concrete information soon enough. In the meantime, mark your calendars for May 25, 2018 - the release date set for the Star Wars: Han Solo Anthology spin-off film.
