The VR space for smartphone companies is becoming quite crowded. LG threw its VR hat in the ring Sunday at MWC with the announcement of its LG 360 VR headset.
Extremely lightweight, the LG 360 VR is only weights 4.1 ounces and is also physically much smaller than other headsets. According to LG, it weighs only a third of average headsets because unlike other phones, you do not have to insert the phone into the goggles/headset. Instead, the 360 VR connects the goggles to the G5 with a USB Type-C cable.
"Heavy gear can be a bear to wear," LG said during its MWC press conference. "The LG 360 VR is extremely light, sports a contemporary look and is extremely comfortable."
LG director of Marketing Frank Lee said the device is foldable and easy to carry around. Despite its weight being a third of most VR headsets, Lee said the resolution is 20 percent better than over devices on the market. LG's VR headset, like its phones, is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon. The LG 360 VR features a resolution of 639 ppi. According to LG, the 360 VR is compatible with images and videos taken with the LG 360 camera, which was also unveiled at MWC.
"With Snapdragon 820, we set to make virtual reality mobile," said Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf. "(It has) the performance and power efficiently to capture and playback 360 photos and video and play VR games."
Mollenkopf said the LG 360 VR is the first VR device featuring Snapdragon's 820 processor. That is a necessary step, by "making VR something you can take with you anywhere."
Like the LG G5, LG did not comment on the availability or price of the LG 360 VR.
