Star Fox Zero got a pretty interesting upgrade on March 3, when the most recent Nintendo Direct announced the game would come bundled with the new Star Fox Guard. A revamp of a Wii U test project, Star Fox Guard came wildly out of nowhere, now as a complete game with a Star Fox sheen.
In addition, Nintendo officially added local multiplayer to Star Fox Zero. In short, Nintendo is really amping up its Star Fox offering. Star Fox Zero is looking much shinier than it did just a month ago. The game is out April 22, and Nintendo really wants us to just take a chance on it.
Star Fox Zero Release Date: Looking Foxier
For a variety of reasons, Star Fox Zero hasn’t gotten a ton of attention despite its high-profile reveal at E3 2015. For some of us, it’s the Star Fox we always dreamed of—Star Fox 64 come again. The latest Nintendo Direct furthered this impression, confirming the game will have branching paths, secret bosses, recurring threats from the Star Wolf team, and—hooray!— the return of Andross as the primary villain. It’s the N64-era fan’s dream.
Other people aren’t so excited, and wanted the series to move in a new direction—or at least look prettier, or have multiplayer. So Nintendo added local multiplayer, probably during the game’s delay. One player can pilot, while another acts as gunner. There ya go. It’s not dogfighting (foxfighting? Wolffighting?), but it’s something. And for those of us who want new and inventive Star Fox gameplay… Star Fox Guard is like nothing the series has ever done before. It’s a fancy, Wii U–ish tower defense game, after all. That’s off the beaten path.
In short, Nintendo is doubling down on Star Fox Zero. It’s giving us more of what Star Fox 64 fans, old-school series lovers, want. It’s adding new gameplay modes in the form of local multiplayer and an entirely separate game, included for no extra charge. What more could you ask for? Nintendo just wants you to take a chance on Star Fox Zero, and the company is making it easier and easier for us to make that decision.
