Nintendo has a slew of big releases in the winter and spring, culminating with the long-awaited Star Fox Zero on April 22. Nintendo is billing the upcoming Star Fox game as “a new beginning for the classic shooter series,” which sounds like great news to me: The series could earnestly use a Star Fox 64-style reboot, which is exactly what it’s getting . The latest bit of news about the game: It’s officially going to have Amiibo support.
Star Fox Zero Amiibo Support Confirmed
Star Fox Zero is an interesting conundrum , in that it is on the surface a very classic and traditional Star Fox game. It’s explicitly modeled on Star Fox 64, after all—so much so that some people don’t like it, and think the game looks too old, graphically speaking . But, at the same time, it features an innovative (and divisive) new control scheme that blends the GamePad’s gyroscope with standard controllerishness. And now Nintendo has officially confirmed that the game will feature Amiibo figures.
Of course, we don’t know yet exactly what those Amiibo figures will do. Nintendo has been quite inventive on this front—a noted distinction from Disney Infinity and Skylanders. That’s not surprising, considering the sheer breadth of games with which Amiibo figures are compatible. So I won’t speculate about their nature. They aren’t going to unlock a new dungeon , though, that’s for sure.
A better question is—will we get more Amiibos for Star Fox Zero? And I think our answer here is a lot more likely to be yes. Star Fox is a little underrepresented in Super Smash Bros, still the primary Amiibo source for most games besides Animal Crossing. It only has two characters: Fox and Falco. Both have Amiibos, but that’s not enough. It would be eminently reasonable for Nintendo to introduce a full lineup of Amiibo figures for Star Fox Zero. There are four very likely candidates: Peppy Hare, Slippy Toad, Wolf O’Donnell, and, of course, Andross (assuming he ends up being the Big Bad ). Add in a Star Fox-specific version of Fox McCloud and Falco Lombardi (how do I know all their last names off the top of my head? Oy) and you’ve got yourself an Amiibo set.
Of course, any new Star Fox Zero Amiibos are firmly in the speculation category for now. But Amiibo support is officially coming, and Nintendo will release more details in its own good time. Star Fox Zero is out on April 22.
