Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is finally on store shelves, bringing an end to the nearly 30-year-old stealth-action franchise, but not everyone has been fortunate enough to have a headache-free experience with the game. But we’ve rounded up fixes for some of the most common Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain bugs, on both PC and consoles, to try and alleviate some of the community’s woes.
Keep in mind, not all of these are official fixes from Konami. In some cases, we’re relying on the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain players who reported the issues to deliver trustworthy information about the solutions to their problems. Obviously, we’ve vetted the procedures when possible, so you don’t need to worry about getting instructions that compromise your PC or ask you to irreversibly destroy your save data. But know we’re not just going cross-post from Konami’s support site, either.
Here are some of the biggest Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain issues to be discovered so far:
1. “Installing game data…” error
After finishing the game’s prologue, did your copy of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain seemingly freeze while installing additional game data?
If so, Konami says a simple reboot of your console should fix the problem. If the problem persists, and you bought your copy of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain digitally, it’s possible that your game hasn’t actually finished downloading.
2. Error 10003
Having trouble connecting to the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain servers?
Konami might be working on the servers that power the game’s FOB features. If you’re reading this on launch day, we’d suggest bookmarking our story on the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain server issues for updates on the issue. We suspect players will see this error much less frequently, the farther removed we get from launch, but we’ll have to wait and see.
3. Game Crashing On Launch (Steam)
According to Konami, certain Phenom II processors have been found to be incompatible with the latest builds of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. While that’s probably going to be a bit of a bummer for some folks, the studio has at least responded pretty quickly, having already released a beta of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain v1.002.
4. Menus Loading Slowly
Some users have reported menus loading slowly when Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is connected to Konami’s servers. While it’s possible this is a side effect of the server woes we saw on launch day, it’s also possible that such delays could continue after the servers return. Those who’ve encountered the issue say the problem disappeared after choosing to play Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain offline. Let’s hope for a better fix soon, though.
5. Game Saves Won’t Load (PS4)
This bug probably won’t be too common, seeing as the player who reported it managed to get their hands on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain nearly a week before launch. That said, if you’re having trouble getting your game saves to load, and managed to get an early copy of MGSV, try uninstalling the game and then preventing it from installing the game’s first update. We’re not sure if this means you can’t ever update the game, or if something just went wrong the first time, but please let us know if you have any extra information to provide on the matter.
6. Game Saves Disappearing (Xbox One)
An alarming number of iDigitalTimes readers have reported missing/lost progress when playing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on Xbox One. The amount of progress lost seems to vary per player, and doesn't seem to be tied to any specific part of the campaign, but those affected find themselves returned to a specific point in the story every time they boot up their Xbox One. No matter how many times they re-complete the content. We haven't found a fix for this one yet but we're seeing enough reports that it only made sense to acknowledge the issue here.
7. Quiet-Induced Game Save Corruption
Some unlucky Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain players are losing game saves with dozens of hours of progress, thanks to a Quiet-related bug that hasn't been fully identified yet seemingly tied to the sniper's gear and the Bond Level players have with Quiet.
Originally, Konami asked players not to use Quiet as their buddy when attempting to complete Missions 29 and 42. Now, the publisher says fans can bring Quiet into those battle zones, but only if the Butterfly Emblem is equipped for the duration of the mission AND completing the mission(s) doesn't max out your connection with the sniper. Konami plans to release a better fix, via an upcoming MGSV patch; however, the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain team needs more time to fix the bug.
UPDATE: Konami says it has fixed the "Quiet bug" on PS4 and PC. Unfortunately, those playing the game on PS3, Xbox 360 and/or Xbox One will need to wait a bit longer before they can confidentally take Quiet along on Missions 29 and 42.
We’ll continue to update this story with prominent Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain bugs, along with fixes/workarounds that worked for other MGSV players, as they’re discovered by the community.
