Gwendoline Christie confirmed at the Screen Actors Guild Awards that her Star Wars: Episode 7 The Force Awakens’ character, Captain Phasma, would return for Star Wars: Episode 8. “I will be in the next Star Wars movie. I think that’s an exclusive, actually,” Christie said to People .
This is the first confirmation from Christie, though Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously promised that Phasma would return, telling the Los Angeles Times , “She’s an important character, a baddie in the best sense of the word.”
But after multiple comparisons to Boba Fett in the run-up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many viewers were disappointed with Captain Phasma’s slim presence in Episode 7. Will she get the chance to go hard in Star Wars: Episode 8?
Keep in mind where Captain Phasma wound up in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Unceremoniously dumped down a trash compactor in the minutes before the destruction of Starkiller Base, chances are good that Captain Phasma is presumed dead. General Hux evacuated Kylo Ren, but there’s no indication that he also rescued his favorite officer.
With the First Order in chaos, Captain Phasma has an opportunity to chase her own revenge.
Could she go AWOL and hunt down Finn herself, embracing the bounty hunter lifestyle of Boba Fett? We’ll see when Star Wars: Episode 8 hits theaters Dec. 15, 2017.
