It’s the summer of superhero blockbusters. Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse are in the limelight during the month of May, but once the weather warms up that attention will shift back to Warner Bros. and DC. Suicide Squad arrives in August, and with its tale centering on a band of villainous do-gooders, it promises to be one of the most unique comic book stories brought to life thus far.
Suicide Squad features a star-studded cast including the likes of Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and Will Smith (Deadshot), but the most anticipated character is played by Jared Leto. The Joker has undergone a significant makeover since the Dark Knight days, but Leto appears to be up to task with his dedicated method acting techniques. Fellow cast members reported that Leto didn’t break character even once during the production of Suicide Squad. But it’s perhaps his latest antics that showcase his commitment to playing The Joker more than ever before.
In a recent interview with CNBC’s Squawk Box , Leto detailed his process of mastering The Joker’s laugh. I’m starting to think this guy truly is crazy enough to play Batman’s archenemy. Take a look at what he said, below:
I worked on the laugh walking around the streets of New York and Toronto, and I kinda would walk around the streets and see what laughs would get under people’s skin. You know when you hear someone laugh at a restaurant? It’s a little jarring. I tried them out. And I kind of got to a place where I would laugh and people are always turning around like, ‘Who is this creepy guy behind me?'
That’s intense, bro. But method acting works, if the performances of Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando and Daniel Day Lewis are to be accounted for. Whatever Leto needs to do to perfect the role of The Joker is fine by me (and surely the rest of movie fans). Early trailers seem to indicate that Leto has done a bang up job with the part. While it remains be seen if he can live up to the legacy of Heath Ledger’s Joker, it seems like we’re all in for a treat.
Suicide Squad arrives in theaters Aug. 5.
