Nintendo’s first major mobile game has already started shattering expectations. Despite only being available on iOS and having been around for just four days, Super Mario Run has already been downloaded over 40 million times.
“I’m overjoyed at having been able to deliver a new Mario game to so many people from all over the world. It’s perhaps necessary to have a little more time being having a sufficient understanding of the profits earned by the game as I feel that the numbers of people who decide to purchase the title will gradually increase,” Super Mario Run creator Shigeru Miyamoto said in a press statement. From now on, we are aiming at broadening the reach of the game so even more people come to experience the joys of playing Mario one handed as a game that even children can feel at ease playing.”
The press statement was originally released in Japanese. Thanks to NeoGAF user Vitor711 for the translation.
Keep in mind that the 40 million figure represents all app downloads, not all of the people who have paid for the full version of the app. So no, Nintendo didn’t just stumble into $400 million.
Those looking forward to an Android version of Super Mario Run will have to wait until 2017. No official release date has been given for Android yet, but Nintendo says it will come at some point (and there may possibly be a price cut once it makes it to Android). Once it does, expect the downloads number for Super Mario Run to double, if not more.
