Super Mario Run will largely consist of Toad Rally once you finish off World Tour, so we’ve made a guide to answer a few of the most popular questions that have emerged since the game’s release. Want to get blue and yellow Toads while trashing your opponents? Here’s what we know.
The Basics : We already have a beginner’s guide that touches on how the Toad Rally mode works, but, we’ll quickly reiterate some of it. Toad Rally is the multiplayer portion of Super Mario Run, and it’s not as much of a time trial as you’d think. The real way to win is to collect coins through stylized play before time runs out.
Performing tricky jumps will get Toads to cheer you on. The Toads, combined with your total coin score, are tallied at the very end of each match.
How To Raise Your Score : There are lots of ways Toad Rally matches are scored, and players are still trying to figure them all out. That being said, here’s what we’ve learned through one day with the game.
- Fill your Coin Rush meter: A Coin Rush in Super Mario Run is triggered when you fill the meter at the top of your screen. For a limited time, any block or avenue to get coins doubles or triples the amount it doles out. The Coin Rush meter is filled by doing tricks.
- Three of the easiest tricks to do in Toad Rally are are double jumps, rolls and flips. To do a rolling jump, just tap the screen before you hit the ground. Flips are triggered by tapping while auto-vaulting over enemies. A double jump is as simple as a double tap.
- Get Pink Coins whenever you see them. They are worth 10 standard coins.
- Reaching a checkpoint before the ghost player also awards 10 coins.
- Killing enemies nets coins as well. Hitting just one foe on the course is one coin, but for each successive enemy the coin reward doubles. For example, two enemies brings the perk to two coins, and three is worth four. This multiplier maintains throughout the match.
- Toads only provide a tiny buff at the end, so, if you don’t see many cheering, don’t panic.
Knowing Who To Battle : The key to making rally tickets worthwhile is to keep winning. A loss will subtract some of the Toads you’ve earned. As such, you’ll want to pick an opponent that sets you up for a win.
- Don’t stray too far from your current Toad level. Getting a huge kingdom of Toads will take longer this way, but at least you’re steadily progressing.
- At the opponent select screen you’ll also see a thumbnail of the course. Try to memorize them so you can keep picking races on courses you’re especially good at.
How To Earn Different Color Toads : As we noted in our character guide, you’ll need a certain assortment of Toad colors to unlock the special houses with character rewards. While you can’t exactly guarantee your colors for each Toad Rally victory, there are some ways to skew the odds in your favor.
- Making it further through World Tour gives you more opportunity to play against others with larger collections of Toads. You might want to beat the campaign first.
- Check out the small Toad group graphic beside your opponent’s avatar. The colors displayed there are essentially a sample of what you might win. At the start you’ll mostly see red, but as you get better, you can watch that space to effectively farm for yellows or blues.
You Can’t Challenge A Friend Directly Yet : Our beginner’s guide illustrates the various ways friends can be added in Super Mario Run, but it’s worth noting that these hand-picked players can’t be raced privately. Right now the friends list is essentially a personalized leaderboard that adds some favor in matchmaking.
