Second time’s the charm for Lunar Ray Games and its homage to 90’s platformers such as Mega-Man and Metroid: Timespinner.
Publisher Chucklefish has announced in a press release that Timespinner is coming to two consoles very soon. Timespinner launches on June 4 for both the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. Starting from a failed Kickstarter campaign in 2014, the attempts to develop the initial Nintendo 3DS version of Timespinner was deemed too ambitious. However, since its launch last September, Timespinner has been well-received on both PC and PlayStation 4 platforms.
The subgenre that is Metroidvania, a portmanteau of Metroid and Castlevania, is the basis of Lunar Ray Games’ aforementioned title. Combining platforming, puzzle-solving and navigating a number of maps and mazes present in many 2D side-scrollers, Timespinner attempts to put its own spin (pun intended) on the genre by including elements of time-manipulation.
Timespinner follows the story of Lunais, who is a head-strong young timekeeper. The game sees her on a quest for vengeance following the massacre of her family by a tyrannical empire. Using her time-bending powers, she tries to change fate itself, by adventuring across a vast, interconnected world.
After the ancient Timespinner device is destroyed, Lunais' parents are murdered. The string of events transports her to an unknown world, left alone and stranded with no hope of return. Using her newfound powers of time manipulation, she hopes to resolve this conflict by destroying the Lachiem empire, but even then, history is not quite as black and white as it seems to be.
The premise itself seems very interesting, and currently Timespinner enjoys a ‘Very Positive’ rating on the Steam pages, which could mean that Lunar Ray Games finally managed to strike gold with this iteration of their title. I might check it out myself, seeing as I’m in quite the mood for Metroidvanias lately.
While no price has been mentioned during Chucklefish’s announcement, it would be safe to assume that it will still be sold at its current price for the two new platforms at $19.99 USD.
Timespinner arrives on the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on June 4.
