Developer Genki said the first "Tokyo Xtreme Racer" game in nearly two decades is coming out in early access on Steam on Jan. 23, 2025.

The upcoming release of the game will use the time it has to "utilize player feedback" so that the developer can elevate "Tokyo Xtreme Racer" even further. The game's early access is expected to last roughly four months.

After that, "Tokyo Xtreme Racer" will have its full release that will introduce the entire story and add new cars, rival characters, and features and improvements.

The developer added that people who dive into the game's early access version will get access to the full release immediately.

What makes this noteworthy is that the Steam early access is coming out later this month at a discounted price.

So far, Valve's gaming platform lists "Tokyo Xtreme Racer's" price as TBA, so fans will have to wait until it is revealed before being able to buy the game, according to Eurogamer.

The latest "Tokyo Xtreme Racer" game was originally announced in August 2024 when the studio shared a short trailer.

The accompanying blurb for the footage said that your rivals will be waiting for you to get back into the ultimate challenge that features thrilling races on the Tokyo Expressway.

The early access version of the game is said to have a story roughly until the halfway point of the full release. The studio noted that it will focus on "Spirit Point Battle" and car tuning features while having more than 200 rival characters, each with a unique storyline.

What To Expect This Month

Additionally, "Tokyo Xtreme Racer" will have 50 playable cars and more than 180 kilometers of the Shuto Expressway for players to race on. The early access version will also feature player skill gains, which is a new feature for the franchise, Gematsu said.

The original franchise has been around for quite some time and remained dormant until the eventual announcement of "Tokyo Xtreme Racer" last year. The first title in the series was "Shutoko Battle '94: Drift King," which was released in 1994 for the Super Famicom.

The synopsis of the upcoming game said that it is a racing game set in a blocked-off future version of Tokyo, Japan. This is where players must race to become the fastest by driving their best machines on the highways and weaving through the city.

Fans who want to get notified when the early access version gets a price or finally releases can wishlist it on Steam, according to Gaming Bible.
