A new Tokyo Xtreme Racer has just been announced and marks the franchise's return after nearly two decades as well as developer Genki.

What we know so far is that Tokyo Xtreme Racer is planning to have a Steam release sometime next year. The announcement came alongside a teaser trailer that showed off a bunch of logos for previous games in the series.

New Tokyo Xtreme Racer Game

The latest game in the franchise is simply known as Tokyo Xtreme Racer and that wasn't much information to see even on the game's Steam page. The official description reads that it is a racing game set in a sealed-off future Tokyo.

It continues to note that in the game, players will compete for the fastest speed using their customized cars running on highways that weave through the city. They will all be racing in order to reach the top, according to Rock Paper Shotgun.

In Tokyo Xtreme Racer, you can drive real cars on meticulously recreated courses, compete against skilled rivals, slip through other cars, and even engage in spirit-wracking battles. The description also notes that it is a series with "unparalleled appeal."

The Tokyo Xtreme Racer franchise is known as Shutoko Battle in Japan and the first game in the series was released in 1994 for the Super Famicom.

Other notable games in the series were Tokyo Xtreme Racer in 1999 for the Dreamcast, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 for the PlayStation 2 in 2003, and Import Tuner Challenge for the Xbox 360 in 2006, said Gematsu.

Coming Back After Two Decades

During the 1990s, when the Tokyo Xtreme Racer franchise was at its peak, console gaming was still in its infancy, which made it not nearly as popular with gamers.

On the other hand, there were a lot of games out of Japan that did not make their way to Europe and North America.

Despite the announcement of the new Tokyo Xtreme Racer game coming next year, there was still no word on whether or not it would also get a version for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X/S.

But with how the upcoming title is described as a console racing game, many fans are presuming that console ports are in the works but may not just be ready in time for the game's actual launch.

Furthermore, there are others who think that the game could be available in the Switch 2, which is one of the reasons that only a PC version was announced, according to ComicBook.
