We love a good TV character death scene just as much as an epic battle. The more emotional the better, and 2017’s TV deaths didn’t disappoint. From Game of Thrones to This Is Us , we’ve said goodbye to many beloved characters this year. Here’s some of the most memorable death scenes.
Shiva- The Walking Dead
After losing all of his soldiers in an ambush, King Ezekiel was ready to let the walkers rip apart his body. Carol and Jerry struggled to get him to safety and it looked like they were going to die with the rest of The Kingdom soldiers. Then Shiva arrived, sacrificing her life to save his. Comic fans knew her death was coming, but Shiva deserved so much better than death by walkers. Ezekiel watched as Shiva roared in agony.
Sasha- The Walking Dead
While technically this happened in the previous season, the Sasha’s death scene aired in early 2017. Sasha devised a plan to get captured by The Saviors to get close to Negan. She convinced Negan she would become a Savior and help him control Rick. Meanwhile, she told Eugene the opposite, asking for something to help end her life. Sasha was hoping for a knife, but Eugene gave her a suicide pill instead. She sacrificed her life in hopes that her walker form would kill Negan.
Michael- Jane The Virgin
This one still hurts. Jane’s husband Michael died unexpectedly due to medical complications stemming from a gunshot wound. The real gut punch here was hearing the narrator say, “And friends, I did say Michael would love Jane until his dying breath,” only to be followed by a screaming Jane collapsing to the floor after hearing the bad news. Gina Rodriguez’s performance in that scene was incredible. Forever team Michael.
Olenna Tyrell- Game of Thrones
We all want to go out like Lady Olenna. After Jaime Lannister took out her army of flowers, he met with the Tyrell family matriarch in her chambers. She calmly asked him how her army fought and how she would meet her maker. Jaime told her she would die with dignity and gave her poison. Jaime thought he had a win under his belt, but Lady Olenna had one last power play in her. “Tell Cersei it was me,” Olenna said referring to Joffrey’s death back in Season 4. And right there, Jaime knew he lost the battle.
Viserion- Game of Thrones
Watching Daenerys Targaryen react to Viserion’s death was brutal. She thought her dragons were untouchable, and believes they are the only children she will ever have. The Night King took it all away from her. And her heart will break again to see what Viserion has become once the White Walkers move south of The Wall in Season 8.
William- This Is Us
There was no TV character death sadder than the loss of William. We all knew he was terminally ill. We knew he was going to die. But the show developed William so beautifully that you didn’t realize that you’d become so attached. William’s scenes with Randall and his family were thoughtful and genuine. The death was written in a way that didn’t feel cheap or emotionally manipulative. It was beautifully tragic.
