Half-Life Alyx finally launched yesterday. The game is making waves in the industry and is one of the best games for VR. It scored 92 percent on PC Gamer and holds a 10/10 rating on Steam. Back in 2017, Valve CEO Gabe Newell announced that there were three VR games currently in development at Valve. However, that is not the case anymore.
Valve designer Greg Coomer told Upload VR that when Alyx was in the development phase, it utilized the majority of the company’s VR development resources. As of now, there are no other VR games in development.
“All the resource for VR game development later in the cycle, during Alyx’s development, all of those resources got moved onto Alyx,” Coomer said in the interview. “So at the moment, no, there aren’t three other titles in development. But, as for what’s coming, we don’t really have something new or newsworthy for you to say: ‘Once Alyx is out the door here’s what you should expect to have happen.'”
The chance of getting another VR title any time soon looks grim. According to Coomer, there are no new plans regarding VR games. That said, Software Engineer Jason Mitchell mentioned that he internally worked on another VR project. So maybe there is still some hope.
“We haven’t made actually any plans about [VR],” Coomer said in the same interview. “So I think we’ve– obviously we get that question from many people. Also like, what exactly is coming next for VR? Also what’s coming next for Half-Life? We really– we’ve been working on this for four years and we’re really excited because the reception before the game is out seems to be really quite positive, so far.”
Given how good the reception of Alyx has been, we really hope that there are other VR games, or even a normal Half-Life game, in the pipeline. I will personally love another Left 4 Dead or Portal game.
