We can’t get enough of Rick and Michonne in The Walking Dead Season 7. The two characters are connected now more than they have ever been.

The latest episode of The Walking Dead Season 7 focused on Rick and Michonne’s mini road trip to find guns. The two shared a lot of intimate moments together as the trip was the first time they’ve actually been alone. Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick on the show, explained to Variety why this episode was important to the show.

More specifically, the episode revealed how important Michonne is to Rick and vice versa. Rick doesn’t want to lead without Michonne. If something happens to him, Rick wants Michonne to move on and build a future for Alexandria. There’s a moment where Michonne thinks Rick is being devoured by walkers. She drops her sword in shock as she watches what she thinks is Rick dying right in front of her. Michonne was forced to think of a life without Rick; she did not like what she saw.

"It’s that moment where she is incredibly vulnerable, she’s shocked by what just happened and how much she feels for Rick and how undone she is by what just happened, by essentially seeing him die,” Lincoln told Variety . “So Rick in exchange — it is an exchange — he tells her about the fact that he feels haunted by the death of Glenn. It’s a sort of exchange of vulnerability which enables them to become stronger. They become more whole.”

Lincoln added, “I think that’s basically their relationship: They become more human, more whole, with each other. She knows that if he does die — and he will die at some point — the community has to go forward. And she is an absolutely qualified leader in her own right. Rick is no fool. He’s in the firing line. He’s going to war with the Big Bad Wolf and there’s going to be collateral damage."

We’re glad Rick was able to explain to Michonne what’s going to happen. He knows there will be loss, and wants Michonne to be prepared for that. There’s an understanding between them. He can lead with Michonne by his side, but not without her. However, Michonne will lead without Rick because it’s the right thing to do. Rick never had this kind of relationship with Lori, even before the apocalypse. It looks like Michonne probably didn’t have that either.
