There’s a reason why we see Dwight back under Negan’s command in The Walking Dead Season 7. Apparently, the only way you’re leaving Negan’s compound is if he kills you himself.
The Walking Dead Season 7 cast member Austin Amelio recently spoke to ComicBook.com about his character Dwight’s decision to join the Saviors. We first met Dwight during a chance encounter with Daryl. Dwight was traveling with two other women when Daryl tried to help them . A walker ends up killing one of the ladies, which forces Dwight and the other unnamed female survivor to steal Daryl’s bike and crossbow.
Dwight was likely trying to escape Negan’s compound and failed. He’s lucky Negan didn’t kill him.
"You don’t really leave the Sanctuary when you are under Negan’s thumb. He will find you and he will kill you. That’s how he works,” Amelio told ComicBook . “I don’t think he understood the gravity of the situation. Negan is this weird dichotomy of someone that you hate and he protects you at the same time."
Dwight has since accepted he belongs to Negan. He does what Negan asks to survive. If you recall, Dwight also looks physically different than when we last saw him with Daryl, with burn scars on one side of his face. In the comic books, Negan is the reason for Dwight’s burns. Negan catches Dwight with his wife Sherry. This wouldn’t be an issue if Negan hadn’t handpicked Sherry to be one of his wives.
Negan likes to make examples out of people to keep the rest of his followers in line. Negan orders Dwight to confess his sins in front of everyone. Negan accepts Dwight’s apology, but takes a hot iron to his face to remind Dwight he cannot disobey him ever again. The show has yet to reveal how Dwight got his scars, but if it’s anything like the comics, we don’t blame him for following Negan’s orders.
Don’t worry, Dwight will get his revenge. The Walking Dead Season 7 premiere airs Oct. 23 on AMC.
