Last we saw Eugene, he was living it up in the Sanctuary with all the perks Negan bestowed onto him in The Walking Dead Season 7.

[WARNING: THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 7 SPOILERS AHEAD]

Eugene seemed like he was reverting back to his original backstory: a scientist working for the U.S. government, studying the virus that caused the outbreak. This was not the case as Eugene turned out to be a big nerd who just needed someone to protect him. Eugene plays the coward role well and fooled Negan into believing he will be loyal to him.

But did Eugene actually fool himself, too? He might be playing along to survive, but he seems to like the way things run in the Sanctuary. Eugene has pseudo power and authority so long as Negan needs him. And let’s be real, Negan absolutely needs someone as smart as Eugene on his team.

Josh McDermitt, who plays Eugene on The Walking Dead , spoke to the U.K’s Metro about Eugene’s alliance with Negan.

“The thing with Eugene pledging his allegiance to Negan, I mean he’s full Negan right now. Whether or not he has intentions that go against that down the road, I don’t know, I didn’t ask, I don’t want to know,” McDermitt said. “It’s a tough place Eugene is in, he doesn’t want to be scared anymore. He’s tired of living in that fearful place that he’s in. He just watched his friends get killed by a madman and I think there’s a line before Eugene says ‘I’m Negan’ which is even more important – and it’s when Negan says to Eugene, ‘Look, you don’t have to be scared anymore.’”

Negan is right. Eugene doesn’t have to be scared because he’s safe in the walls of the Sanctuary for now. Negan has manage to fortify his home base well. In that moment, Negan bonds with Eugene in a way that the people in Alexandria haven’t. Most of Rick’s group, including his one “friend” Rosita, have called out Eugene for being weak and a coward.

Eugene isn’t a fighter, but that doesn’t mean he’s not of use. Eugene made the walkers along the Sanctuary’s fence invincible when he suggested Negan cover them in metal. The smartest people on Negan’s team didn’t even think about to cover the walkers. There’s a strong possibility Eugene will fight with Negan. If he does, Rick will have another disadvantage to deal with.
