The Walking Dead comics fans might get to see how Negan slowly turned into a villain in The Walking Dead Season 7.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan revealed fans will learn a lot about his character before the mid-season break during an interview with Entertainment Weekly . It’s unlikely the show will dedicate an entire episode to Negan in Season 7 as he’s relatively new to the cast and there are other characters’ pasts the show can explore.

However, Morgan did tease the show will spend a lot of time with Negan and the Saviors, thus revealing details about the his character’s history. You’ll find out what Negan was up to before the apocalypse and how he was able to convince others to follow him.

“So in finding out more about Negan, we’ll find out how his life has been since the zombie apocalypse started, since the outbreak began, and we’ll find out sort of how Negan has come to be who he is,” Morgan told EW . “He rules with an iron fist and a sense of humor. He’s a very charismatic guy. But a lot of those questions will be answered and more are coming, but we’re going to find out some backstory very quickly on how the Saviors operate and how Negan operates. I think by mid-season or so a lot of those questions will be answered.”

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Negan rules by fear. He knows he can manipulate and charm people into doing what he wants, but he’s not afraid to pull out Lucille when all else fails. Negan has a large network of followers, bigger than what Rick’s group originally anticipated. Negan’s network didn’t grow overnight. It’s possible at one point Negan was trying to do the right thing, but was forced to become ruthless. We’ve seen characters like Rick and Carol go through brutal transformations, so who’s to say the zombie apocalypse affect Negan as well?

Of course, there’s always the possibility Negan was always an asshole and was meant to live in a post-apocalyptic world. Still, most people don’t go crazy overnight. Something must’ve happened to Negan. Hopefully, The Walking Dead Season 7 can show the more human side of Negan, but it is fun watching Morgan play the bad guy.

The Walking Dead Season 7 premieres Oct. 23 on AMC.
