The Walking Dead Creator Robert Kirkman knew it was time to kill off Glenn when Negan came around. Unfortunately, there was no way of saving Steven Yeun’s character in the show.

Kirkman explained to Entertainment Weekly how difficult it was to write Glenn’s death in the comics. Glenn’s death was the first Kirkman had to write after the character was cast. All the other major deaths in The Walking Dead, like Herschel and Abraham, had already been written and the cast members were aware their time was limited.

Unfortunately, Kirkman’s love for Yeun didn’t stop him from writing off the character. The Walking Dead creator went on to tell EW the material that comes from Glenn’s death, especially with Maggie, was too important to skip over in the show.

“It’s just that there’s a lot of material that comes from Glenn’s death in the comics,” Kirkman told EW. “And while we do try to change things up to keep things interesting for the audience, and for me, this is one that there’s so much that comes from Rick, there’s so much with Negan, because that character is someone that he killed, and definitely Maggie is someone that kind of gets put on the trajectory that affects a great number of stories and a great number of characters moving forward. So it was kind of essential that that part of the scene at least remained intact, unfortunately.”

We agree with Kirkman. As painful as it was to see Glenn and Abraham die, their deaths aren’t in vain. The Walking Dead fans will get to see Maggie become a strong leader in her own rights. Rick isn’t the only one capable of surviving in the zombie apocalypse; we need female leaders in the show too.

What do you think about Kirkman killing off Glenn? Do you think it was the right move? Let us know in the comments below. The Walking Dead Season 7 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
