Rick Grimes will be willing to fight for his people, no matter what the cost in The Walking Dead Season 8.
By now, Rick knows how the new world works. He’s seen what people are capable of when they’re trying to survive. But at some point you have to do more than just hold on; you have to rebuild. This is why Rick wants to go to war. This is why he’ll suffer the losses, because he knows there’s more to the world than Negan’s brutal reign.
“[Rick] will suffer any loss, even his own self,” showrunner Scott Gimple told TVLine, “to give his people and other people the life that they should live, where the world belongs to all of them and not just one person. A real life.”
“That’s the only choice,” Gimple added. “So he’s willing to face the losses.”
One of the losses could be Rick’s own life or the death of his loved ones. Michonne, Carl and Judith have become a family. Carl looks at Michonne like he would a mother. At this point, it’s amazing Rick hasn’t lost any more of his family. Rick lost Lori and Shane early on, and he’s been focused on Carl and Judith until Michonne came around.
“It isn’t that he’s willing to shake them off if they were to occur, or immediately rationalize them away,” Gimple told TV Line, referring to Rick potentially losing people, “but he understands the enormity of what they are doing and the enormity of the possible cost.”
Negan is unlike anyone Rick has encountered. Negan is much more organized and has an unknown amount of resources. Despite not having the upper hand, Rick managed to win the first fight against Negan. But one fight isn’t enough to break him.
