Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has always done a decent job at subtly connecting to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe . The most recent example is Captain America: Civil War . S.H.I.E.L.D. felt the after-effects of the Sokovia Accords , forcing many inhuman agents to register with the government and follow special protocol. The series also synced up with the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron . Now, the ABC series is gearing up for Doctor Strange.
Executive Producers Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon caught up with Entertainment Weekly to discuss Doctor Strange ’s impact on AoS. As it turns out, AoS and Doctor Strange connect on a fundamental level, largely due to the presence of two of Marvel’s most mystical, supernatural characters: Ghost Rider and Dr. Stephen Strange.
“Our ties are at times very direct and at times are more thematic,” Whedon said. “The tie this year will feel more of a reflection of the movie, less an interweaving plot. As that movie hits the world, it comes at the right time in our show, and you will see some of those same ideas being explored.”
Ghost Rider in AoS is part of a larger Marvel effort to expand the mystical side of the MCU. Doctor Strange will lead the fray in this, come Nov. 4.
“The same questions that our team is exploring leading up to the premiere of Doctor Strange , perhaps some of those concepts will be reflected in the movie and then carried through,” Tancharoen added.
Agents of SHIELD airs on ABC Tuesdays at 10 p.m.
