George R.R. Martin (GRRM), author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series upon which Game of Thrones is based, offered a release date update for his next installment, The Winds of Winter, on his LiveJournal.
In the comment field for a post about the New York Giants and the Golden Globes, GRRM responded to a commenter badgering him for a Winds of Winter release date update, writing “it has been a whole year since we have received an update… unless you want to be bombarded with im’s like this, i would suggest another updated.” (sic)
GRRM responded with skepticism that any update could satisfy the hordes baying for the next Game of Thrones sequel. Nevertheless, GRRM wrote, “I’ll try it your way.” Here’s what he had to say about the prospect of The Winds of Winter arriving in 2017:
“Not done yet, but I’ve made progress. But not as much as I hoped a year ago, when I thought to be done by now. I think it will be out this year. (But hey, I thought they same thing last year).”
Since The Winds of Winter is not yet complete, there’s probably no way it can beat the premiere date for Game of Thrones Season 7. But at least The Winds of Winter could beat Season 8.
