It’s been quite a while since a game in The Witcher series has been released. If you've been waiting for a new one, prepare to hear some good news. None other than CD PROJEKT RED confirmed that the next installment in the franchise is now in development.
CD PROJEKT RED revealed in a post that for this upcoming game, they’ll be making the move from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5. It also marks the start of a strategic partnership with Epic Games, not only through licensing but also in technical development. The developer added that their main goal is to help make the engine for open-world experiences.
In a statement, CD PROJEKT RED CTO Paweł Zawodny shared that one of the core aspects of its internal RED 2.0 Transformation is to have a stronger focus on technology, and the partnership with Epic Games is based on that principle. He added that even from the beginning, they never considered a typical licensing arrangement. Zawodny went on to say that it was important for them to have a technical direction of their next game decided even at the start.
He also said that the partnership with Epic Games is exciting since it levels up the development predictability and efficiency, and gives the studio access to cutting-edge game development tools.
Meanwhile, Epic Games Founder and CEO Tim Sweeney said that they have been building Unreal Engine 5 to allow teams to create dynamic open worlds at an unprecedented scale and level of fidelity. He said that they are honored to be given the chance to partner with CD PROJEKT RED and push the limits of interactive storytelling and gameplay together.
While the new Witcher game is going to utilize Unreal Engine 5, CD PROJEKT RED also confirmed that REDengine remains the one for Cyberpunk 2077 and is being used for the upcoming expansion of Cyberpunk 2077.
