The new Wonder Woman trailer shown at Comic-Con has me terrified. It looks like a cross between Captain America and Thor with just a splash of DC insanity. The trailer starts off looking like one of the new Star Trek films, with Captain Kirk ( known as Steve Trevor in this film ) lying on a beach while staring at a woman who says she’s never seen a man before. After that, we get to see a repurposed Odin throne, a dress with a sword in the back that just couldn’t exist and a lot of slow-mo.
Here’s the thing about Wonder Woman – her story is insane. She’s an Amazon who ventures into the real world to solve the problems of man. Out of all of DC’s heroes making it to the big screen, she is going to be the hardest for an audience to understand. We all know what defines Batman or Superman, but what really defines Wonder Woman? Is is it her lasso that stems from her time as a BDSM symbol , or is it her bloodlust and anger at the world of men that drives her to fight and protect?
Wonder Woman’s trailer makes me scared for the movie. You can’t go “grimdark” like Batman Vs. Superman – Wonder Woman won’t work like that. If your tongue isn’t firmly planted in your cheek when you are telling her story, the audience won’t be able to connect. For god’s sake she has an invisible jet, the campiest of superhero gadgets since Bat-Shark repellant .
Warner Bros., I implore you, don’t drag Wonder Woman through the mud. She’s a feminist symbol who fights for what she believes in, but knows how fucked up the world is. Turning her into a Captain America clone who fights in an actual World War won’t do her any justice.
Wonder Woman comes out June 2 2017.
