The Xbox Series X and Series S consoles launched on November 10, and according to Xbox head Phil Spencer, the release has been the "largest launch in Xbox history."
Spencer took it to Twitter to announce that “in 24 hrs more new consoles sold, in more countries, than ever before. We’re working with retail to resupply as quickly as possible. You continue to show us the connective power of play is more important than ever.”
The Xbox Series X and Series S consoles were in such high demand that even the pre-orders for both sold out pretty much immediately. While Spencer said that the Xbox Series X and Series S have broken records, he did not mention the total number of consoles that were sold on launch day.
Following the massive launch of the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, Spencer was also interviewed by The Guardian, where he shared interesting insights on how Microsoft looks at gaming.
Spencer told The Guardian that Microsoft doesn't plan to share console sale numbers publicly, and despite the consoles' massive day one launch, the company continues to prioritize player numbers over console sale numbers.
“I know it seems manipulative and I’ll apologise for that,” said Spencer to The Guardian, “but I don’t want my team’s focus on [console sales]. The primary outcome of all the work that we do is how many players we see, and how often they play. That is what drives Xbox."
When discussing Xbox's competition, Spencer said that he loves competing with Sony and Nintendo as they have been in the business for decades. However, he went on to say that Microsoft now has new competitors, namely Amazon and Google, especially in the cloud gaming department.
