XCOM 2 is a mighty fine game, with a lot of mighty fine strategy . But ongoing performance issues are causing a lot of players to question Firaxis and 2K’s optimization tactics while they seek solutions online. Obviously, 2K is well aware of the issues and addressed those concerns with a forum post/troubleshooting guide .
“We are aware some players have experienced performance issues while playing XCOM 2 , and we are looking into them and gathering more information from users. We want everyone to have the best experience possible, and will continue supporting the title with upcoming patches,” Community Manager Dave Hinckle wrote in the post.
The troubleshooting guide includes obvious tips, like turning down the graphics settings, alongside tech specific problems like what to do if you get ‘Application Error (0xc000007b).’ Anyone experiencing XCOM 2 performance issues would be wise to check the 2K forum post for tips, and then head on over to the r/xcom subreddit for even more insight.
For starters, you can read a lengthy post speculating on the why behind so many performance issues from u/ spincrus . Another post from u/ prometheusdarko lists a number of troubleshooting tips as well including a link to some .INI file manipulation that could help. It also appears the current XCOM 2 performance issues are similar enough to XCOM: Enemy Unknown performance issues u/ suffuri cited in an old Steam forum post that applies to the current game.
For those who aren’t experiencing major issues, and are also technologically challenged, I offer the following tip (which I gleaned from somewhere on the subreddit but cannot track down the source so all glory and love go to the anonymous OP): push CAPS LOCK during the post-mission loading screen. You know, the screen that feels like it takes an eternity while you watch your soldiers fidget around in the cargo hold of a plane? Hitting CAPS LOCK pauses the video animations and the game loads much, much faster. I can absolutely confirm that this works. Do it.
