The breakout hit of my life, American Gods on Starz, has been renewed for a second season after just two episodes. Those two episodes are better TV than full seasons of some other shows that shall go unnamed, so color me delighted but not surprised.

According to Deadline, season 2 of American Gods should launch in mid-2018, so we’ll have a few solid years of divine shenanigans to look forward to. A specific number of episodes is yet to be finalized, but season 2 of American Gods should have at least as many as season 1: 8 episodes, a cornucopia of godliness and enough for a full work day’s worth of bingeing.

American Gods is Starz’ best performing original series yet: over all three of its debut weekend plays, episode 1 of American Gods attracted 1.4 million viewers. In delayed viewing and on multiple platforms, American Gods ‘ first episode has over 5 million viewers so far.

“Bryan Fuller, Michael Green and Neil Gaiman have evolved the art form of television narratively, structurally and graphically with American Gods , and we’re thrilled to be working again with these artists as they continue to build the worlds and wars of the gods,” Starz programming president Carmi Zlotnik said in a press release.

American Gods has been a ground-breaking series born out of belief and it’s thrilling to be partnered with Starz to continue this ambitious story,” said FremantleMedia North America’s co-CEO Craig Cegielski. “Neil Gaiman, Bryan Fuller and Michael Green have ignited a conversation through cinematic magic, presented through a diverse ensemble of actors that continue to keep us engaged and inspired.”

American Gods centers on the war between old gods of biblical and mythological origins and new gods born of society’s obsession with money, media, technology and more. It centers around Shadow Moon (The 100's Ricky Whittle), an ex-con who gets looped into becoming a bodyguard and companion to Mr. Wednesday (Deadwood's Ian McShane). By all appearances Mr. Wednesday is a charming conman, but he’s got a few secrets of his own. Together the two are gathering the forces of the old guard to prepare for a showdown with the new deities.

Based on Neil Gaiman’s 2001 novel, a few characters such as Technology Boy have received tweaks to keep them modern. But with Gaiman also listed as an executive producer, such changes appear to be made with his blessing and in the spirit of keeping the show as relevant as the original novel was when published.
