Publisher Lightning Games and developer ThinkingStars announced the September 1 release date for the Nintendo Switch version of ANNO: Mutationem. The game is a pixel-based cyberpunk RPG platformer first released on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam on March 17. Besides this upcoming Switch version, iOS and Android versions are also on the horizon, with a beta coming sometime this winter.
ANNO: Mutationem takes place in a “2D meets 3D” cyberpunk world, as it marries action and adventure with RPG and platforming elements. You play as Ann, a skilled and trained lone wolf agent on a very personal mission within this giant Metropolis, a maze of neon lights filled with mega-corporations, mysterious fringe groups, and bizarre and almost-otherworldly creatures.
ANNO: Mutationem’s world is full of many surprises for Ann to discover outside of her quest. Along the way, she’ll meet a Cyborg corgi, take on a bartending job, hunt down vicious criminals, and reveal the true face of a trending V-tuber (which, in this case, is called a V-streamer). Players are free to explore the sprawling cybercity filled with various dazzling locales including Noctis Town, off-shore cargo ships, and huge underground structures.
Without a doubt, ANNO: Mutationem’s main draw outside the pleasing cyberpunk aesthetic is the unique 2D-to-3D gameplay, referring to seamless switching between the two perspectives. Ann will need to cross certain platforming and combat sections in 2D, while the world will switch to 3D in the vaster exploration mode to better interact with the world and its inhabitants. As for combat, Ann can slash, shoot, combo, grenade-throw, and ground-pound her way through numerous enemies and various fearsome bosses. Ann can wield a variety of weapons, from great swords to double blades, from pistols to rocket launchers and uppercuts, and so much more.
ANNO: Mutationem also comes with a special Collector’s Edition, although it’s not clear yet if the Switch version will also see this release. It includes a digital artbook, digital soundtrack, two special outfits, three special weapons with various particle effects, and two weapon enhance chips for Ann.
