We may know all about the next Assassin’s Creed game, thanks to a rumor found on 4Chan and posted to ResetEra by user dex3108. According to the rumor, the next game in the long-running franchise is called Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok, and as the name implies, players are heading up north to the land of vikings.
According to the post, Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok is scheduled to release next year. What’s interesting about this release is Ragnarok is said to be a cross-generation release. It isn’t too surprising to see developers working on cross-gen games, especially since we know so much about the PS5 already. If consumers know about the next PS5, that means this information (and presumably information about the next Xbox console) was given to developers a while ago.
As for what Ragnarok will be like, it sounds like there will be many carry-over mechanics from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. There will be a map with several kingdoms on them, representing Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway. This means boats and naval combat make a return. However, it was mentioned naval combat has been deemphasized this time around in favor of on-foot exploration.
Another returning feature is the large-scale “conquest” battle mode. This mode is used to weaken enemy strongholds in different parts of the world, and can also help push narrative forward.
As one would assume seeing the progression the Assassin’s Creed games have had over the past few releases, the RPG mechanics have returned as well. This means players can expect to level up their character, unlock new skills, and have to manage different pieces of equipment. In fact, the post specifically mentions there’s a larger emphasis this time around on player build and armor usage.
As far as the story goes, and how Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok fits into the overall Assassin’s Creed timeline, we can make some basic assumptions, thanks to the time period depicted. The post mentions the player character becomes an Assassin and learns to use hidden blades, so this makes Ragnarok take place after Odyssey and Origins. Players are said to be friends with Ragnar Lodbrok, which means this should be taking place roughly around the mid 800s A.D.
Also like Odyssey, it sounds like Ragnarok features a healthy dose of mysticism. It’s mentioned the Assassin’s Creed First Civilization storyline is being downplayed this time around, but expect plenty of Norse myths and legends to pop up instead.
Along with the information dump, the 4Chan leak also included a series of photos. These pictures all look like they are off-screen photos of a monitor taken with a cell phone. While it seems possible these could be faked, especially since they are pretty low-quality photos, and models and graphics look like they are still in the placeholder stage, it’s still an interesting look at what the next Assassin’s Creed could look like. Like the rest of this rumor, be sure to take everything with a big grain of salt.
