The Russo brothers have hinted at Star-Lord’s role in at least one of the two-part Infinity War films, but now it appears we may see more Guardians of the Galaxy characters joining the Avengers than originally anticipated.
Nerdist caught up with Infinity War saga screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and the duo revealed we can expect at least a few Guardians to come through and help take down the Infinity Gauntlet wielding big bad: Thanos.
“Let me put it this way: you know who owns that gauntlet, right? You know who's in another movie and his kids are in that movie...you do the math,” Markus said. “It’s a big universe,” McFeely added.
Thanos’ contentious daughters, Nebula and Gamora, were introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy alongside Peter Quill’s team of Groot, Drax The Destroyer and Rocket Raccoon. We’ll get more acquainted with these characters in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2, where there will undoubtedly be a few nods to the events to come in Infinity War Part 1 .
With an arsenal of over 60 available characters , which essentially includes everyone except for The Defenders (womp womp Netflix), the creative team has a lot of decisions to make. Even with all the options, McFeely is still most excited about giving Thanos the screen time he deserves.
Markus noted that Thanos has only had about “20 seconds” of screen time. We knew the deviant alien would star in Avengers: Infinity War after his introduction in the Avengers: Age of Ultron mid-credit scene, where he decides to go after the infinity gems himself after numerous failed attempts of sending minions to retrieve them.
He’s on an undying quest to find all 6 infinity stones (as seen in Guardians of the Galaxy ) to fill his infinity gauntlet, which would give him amazing powers. Thanos is able to absorb, project and manipulate cosmic energy, allowing him to use a range of abilities including telekinesis and telepathy. Since he’s also a technology genius, he can teleport, time-travel and journey to alternate universes.
“He hasn’t had an amazing scene. I think it’s an advantage ultimately, right? Because people are anticipating this guy coming in and really delivering the goods. So, I think they’re eager, and we just have to deliver it. We don’t have to convince them that he’s gonna be interesting. We just have to execute what has been teased,” McFeely told the Huffington Post.
Infinity War will also see the return of Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury, and possibly even Captain Marvel. Taking into account Tony Stark's Age of Ultron vision where The Avengers lay sprawled on the ground on a rock in outer space, a change of scenery (and maybe the introduction of S.W.O.R.D.?) doesn't come as too much of a surprise.
Captain America: Civil War is currently in theaters. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premieres May 5, 2017. The soon-to-be retitled Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 arrives May 4, 2018.
