'A Minecraft Movie' Breaks Record: Biggest Opening Weekend in US

After less than three days since Warner Bros. Pictures, Universal Pictures, and Legendary Entertainment debuted "A Minecraft Movie," it is now raking in massive revenue for the franchise.

The Hollywood Reporter recently shared that for its opening weekend, "A Minecraft Movie" generated $157 million in the United States alone.

"Minecraft's" movie adaptation has surpassed the previous record set by Nintendo and Illumination's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" from 2023. Previously, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" saw a domestic opening weekend gross of $146 million and was previously the top-grossing opening weekend for a video game adaptation.

"A Minecraft Movie" is also breaking expectations in its global cinematic performance as it has earned $301 million collectively in its opening weekend in the different regions where it was available.

That being said, "A Minecraft Movie" is still behind "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" in terms of its global performance as the animated feature film raked up an incredible $377 million internationally.

'Minecraft's' Video Game Adaptation Is a Success

According to Engadget, this was an unexpected performance for Mojang's "Minecraft" movie adaptation as many first impressions on its trailers were mixed. The promotional content from its team were also met with low expectations, which made it a surprise that it performed well when it hit the theaters.

Its domestic and international opening weekend performance shows that it was a hit among the masses, particularly for fans of "Minecraft," with the new film introducing everyone to the realm of pixels and creativity.

"A Minecraft Movie" features the likes of Jack Black as Steve, alongside Jason Momoa as the new character introduced only in the movie and serves as its main protagonist, Garrett Garrison. The film also stars Sebastian Hansen as Henry, Emma Meyers as Natalie, alongside Jennifer Coolidge and Danielle Brooks as part of its supporting cast.

The film explores the introduction of a new realm called the "Overworld," which is only accessible via a portal that leads into the "Minecraft" universe.

According to reviews, the video game adaptation was able to capture the comical and fun world of "Minecraft" and lead the audience to explore the creative beauty that can be made using imagination and free will.
