Talks have broken down with prospective The Batman director Matt Reeves, known for previous efforts like Cloverfield and War for the Planet of the Apes, Variety reports.
It’s another setback for a film that’s rumored to be troubled in everything from scripts to its lead actor and now, directors.
According to a Variety studio source, the early talks with Reeves have broken down. While talks can resume down the road according to that source, the negotiations are currently at a stop.
The same source insisted that Warner Bros would be making The Batman no matter what. Production has already been pushed back to the summer, and with this latest directorial wrinkle, the film’s schedule remains unclear.
“Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life,” the studio said in a separate statement after Affleck stepped down from his role as director in order to focus on his acting responsibilities.
In an earlier statement to Variety, Affleck said, “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
