Over the years, there have been a handful of Hollywood actors who have donned the cape and cowl. And people have their own opinions to share when it comes to who did it best. Now, there is a new Caped Crusader and everyone is anticipating his take on the role.
The upcoming The Batman movie will be directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and will star some of Hollywood’s hottest talent. The next iteration of Warner Bros’ superhero drama will be taking a whole new route on the world’s greatest detective. The film features Robert Pattinson (Harry Potter, Twilight) in the lead and will be a standalone effort.
When is the release date for The Batman?
The Batman is due in US cinemas on June 25, 2021. As far as the UK release date is concerned, it has yet to be confirmed. More details about the movie’s official release date should be revealed in the near future. And while there has been no official announcement as to when the production will start exactly, reports say that it will either kick off in late 2019 or early 2020 in London.
The movie will be the fourth live-action film in DC's production slate. It will then be followed, officially, by The Suicide Squad, which James Gunn will both direct and write. It seems the future of DC is looking healthier than ever.
Who is in The Batman cast?
Robert Pattinson is the new Batman. The Twilight actor was revealed to be the next Bruce Wayne earlier this year, although he mentioned not being exactly sure how it all happened. “It’s kind of insane,” Pattinson said in an interview. “I was so far away from ever thinking it was a realistic prospect. I literally do not understand how I’ve got it, at all.”
Pattinson previously teased an “interesting direction” for the new movie, saying it would be “something from the comics which hasn’t really been explored yet”.
In another interview (see video below), Pattinson revealed that his The Lighthouse co-star Willem Dafoe could inspire his take on Batman’s recognizable voice.
“Willem’s voice in this is quite inspiring for it to be honest. It is pretty similar to the voice I’m gonna do,” he explained. “I think Batman has a sort of pirate-y kind of voice, I think that would really suit him.”
Ben Affleck was supposed to reprise the role he filled in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017’s Justice League. Unfortunately, a variety of circumstances surfaced, forcing the 47-year-old had to leave the role, as well as drop the writing and directing tasks.
Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman
For the role of Selina Kyle, who is also known as Catwoman, Reeves has decided to acquire someone with a little bit more experience in the art of the comic book movie. Following her stint voicing the same character in The Lego Batman Movie (2017), Zoe Kravitz is confirmed to star in The Batman as Kyle, the athletic burglar and long-running love interest of Batman.
As detailed in a report, Kravitz obtained the role after reading with Pattinson and three other candidates. Director Matt Reeves confirmed the casting on social media when he tweeted a short video of Kravitz answering her phone.
Paul Dano as The Riddler
Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood) hit the headlines when it was revealed he was in talks to take on a role in Reeves’ The Batman. Interestingly, Dano was later on confirmed after previous rumours suggested Jonah Hill would be coming on board as the project’s lead villain.
Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon
The Westworld actor Jeffery Wright will be lighting the Bat-signal for Matt Reeves’ The Batman. He signed up to play Commissioner James W. Gordon, the reluctant ally of the Caped Crusader and detective for Gotham City Police Department. The character was previously played by Oscar-winner Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan’s critically-acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy.
What is the plot of The Batman?
Unfortunately, little is known of The Batman movie by Matt Reeves. However, it has been said that the movie will focus on Bruce Wayne’s younger and more vulnerable years. Reeves even said that he would like the film to focus more on the detective side of Batman, something that the character is really known for, rather than just the brute strength most Batman iterations showcased in the past.
