Gearbox, the famed developer behind the Borderlands franchise, may be trying to build some hype about its next game, whatever it may be. In the latest tweet by the developer, signs are pointing (quite literally) to Borderlands 3 being announced at the upcoming PAX East.

On Twitter, Gearbox posted an image with the same cel-shading visual effects that the Borderlands franchise is known for. The image shows a road sign on a freeway exit with information pertaining to a date, a location, and an exit number. The date: March 28. The location: Boston, MA. The exit number: three.

The folks here at Player. One may not be rocket scientists, but unlike Valve, we sure as hell know how to count to three. March 28 is the day of the opening ceremony of PAX East, which is going to be held in Boston, Massachusetts. Although there’s no definitive evidence yet, it’s only a little more than two weeks from now when we’ll find out for sure.

PAX East is a showcase event for game developers to show their stuff. Gearbox has already confirmed that it will be making an appearance at the expo, which leaves fans anxious to find out why. Does this teaser on Twitter mean that Borderlands 3 is on the way? Or does the three on the exit sign imply something else? There’s plenty of speculation on just about every corner of the gaming community as to what the teaser means. Although whether its Borderlands 3, or another spinoff of the series, or even an entirely new project, we’re all excited to find out what’s next.

The Borderlands franchise is widely-regarded one of the pioneers of the looter-shooter genre. Combining the fast-paced experience of first-person shooters with the deep progression system of action RPGs, Borderlands gave birth to a genre that now dominates the gaming industry. Today, the latest looter-shooters like the Destiny franchise and the free-to-play Warframe can trace their roots to Gearbox’s Borderlands. Enjoyed by millions around the world, the Borderlands franchise has fans begging for a sequel. After all, not counting the prequel, spinoffs and addons released in recent years, the last numbered game in the main series was Borderlands 2 - and that came out six years ago.
