It’s been quite a week for Borderlands 3, what with its gameplay finally being revealed last Wednesday and the subsequent issues regarding the inclusion of supposed microtransactions. This time, we get some new information regarding the upcoming DLC packs previously teased by Gearbox, the developer of Borderlands 3.
In a response to a Twitter user who asked whether Borderlands 3 would get DLC Vault Hunters – the playable characters in the Borderlands series – as previously seen in Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford states that the team is “focused on the main game for now, but my feelings are that it might be better for us to put our time into expanding what the existing vault hunters can do and how interesting their future growth is instead of adding new ones to start over with.”
He goes on to state that this information comes from reliable data made by Gearbox with regards to what Borderlands players want. He reiterates by saying that his “analysis of the data suggests the vast majority of players would benefit from expansion to existing characters ahead of creation of new characters.”
In terms of fleshing out the existing main campaign, this would be a solid move indeed. It was previously reported that Borderlands 3 has four story DLCs in the making, and it would be very possible that those DLCs focus on each of the characters in the game. It’s a good way to not convolute and oversaturate the story with other characters, while at the same time expand on your existing ones and adding another good chunk of story.
That’s not to say DLC Vault Hunters are not going to be welcome additions later in the game though. I absolutely loved Krieg the Psycho in Borderlands 2, and I thought his addition was a very welcome one to point out that some of the psychos in the Borderlands universe are also vault hunters themselves.
In any case, we’re excited to see how Gearbox will pull off its DLC content, which are sometimes the best parts of the series.
Borderlands 3 is set to be released on September 13 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the Epic Games Store on PC.
