Fans have been waiting for details about the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, however, the studio has remained tight-lipped. According to a recent report, we might know who's going to play the role of fan-favorite character Johnny Cage.
The champion of the Earthrealm could be represented by Karl Urban. The actor is reportedly in final talks with New Line Cinema and might very well be present in the sequel of the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie.
Karl Urban Previous Works
Karl Urban is most known for starring in superhero television series called The Boys. He's also known for his work in Star Trek, The Lord of the Rings, and Thor: Ragnarok. But Mortal Kombat 2 won't be the first video game movie for Karl Urban as the actor had previously starred in a motion picture adaptation of DOOM in 2005. Unfortunately, the said movie was critically panned by reviews. Even its own actors agree that the adaptation was a "stinker."
Successful Video Game Adaptation
Speaking of video game adaptation, things have been quite great these last few years. Arkane and Cyberpunk Edgerunners from Netflix have proved that TV shows based on video games can be incredible, and The Last of Us by HBO surprised many and even received critical reception.
The Video Game Movie Curse
But what about movies? For a long time, any movie based on a video game used to be downright bad. Even the first Mortal Kombat movie released in 1995 was nothing to write home about. Thankfully, things have been changing recently. The 2021 adaption of Mortal Kombat was liked by fans, although the critics didn't.
Two more iconic video game series, Sonic and Mario, have been converted to the big screen and got good reception. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released last month, has crossed the $1-billion mark and is currently the highest-grossing video game film adaptation. Whether Mortal Kombat 2will be able to break the record is yet to be seen.
