Subset Games, the studio behind the beloved FTL, is hard at work on its next release, a tactical strategy game about an ongoing war with enormous monsters that threaten what’s left of mankind. Into The Breach is unlike its predecessor in many ways, from structure to aesthetic, but it’s rocketed to the top of our list of Most Anticipated Games of 2018.
We can’t possibly overstate how much this game targets the folks who watched Pacific Rim and wondered “Why isn’t this a video game yet?” Into The Breach is set after the fall of civilization and sees the remaining pockets of people banding together to build giant robots capable of fending off the enormous creatures that threaten what’s left of mankind. It’s your job to protect the few remaining cities on Earth. And there’s even a time-travel component, teased on ITB’s Steam page, that Subset Games isn’t saying much about yet.
Most importantly, award-winning FTL composer Ben Prunty will create a brand new soundtrack for Into The Breach and he’s already released a sample of the game’s combat music. We can only hope it proves worthy of another vinyl treatment from iam8bit. FTL’s soundtrack made for a stunning physical release and Into The Breach’s Mech vs. Kaiju narrative offers a dizzying array of choices when it comes time to design new packaging.
The bad news is we still don’t have a timeline for the project’s release. Steam says Into The Breach will debut “when it’s ready,” but Subset apparently isn’t ready to offer a more specific timeline yet. It’s a bit strange, given that a new Rock, Paper, Shotgun interview with the team suggests Into The Breach is nearly feature-complete (from an outsider’s perspective). But we’ll just have to hope the studio doesn’t plan to make fans wait much longer for the full release.
