When the first commercial for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was released in Japan, there was a lot of new footage from the game, including a shot of what appeared to be a giant dragon flying through the sky.
And as you make your way through Hyrule, you will notice a few giant dragons in the sky. But what are they there for and what do they do? Well, the purpose of the dragons in Breath of the Wild is to get some rare, special items and to complete certain Shrine Quests.
LOCATIONS
There are three dragons in Breath of the Wild, and they appear more frequently during the day especially during sunrise. If you interact with them, you’ll complete some Shrine Quests. Be aware that each dragon has an affinity to a certain element.
Dinraal
Shrine Quest - The Spring of Power
Location: The northernmost section of the world map, to the north of Eldin Mountains, then travels through Tanagar Canyon.
Naydra
Shrine Quest - The Spring of Wisdom
Location: Lanaryu region. Go to the Lanaryu Promenade to get the best shot at the dragon, or you can go to the top of Mount Lanaryu and in Lanaryu Bay.
Farosh
Shrine Quest - The Serpent’s Jaws
Location: The region with the waterfalls to the east of Faron Tower, above Lake Hylia. Or you can go to the Gerudo Highlands.
ITEMS
When you complete the Shrine Quest, head to the dragon’s habitat and wait until the dragon spawns. Players will see the dragon fly very high in the air at first, before moving closer to the ground; this is your cue to move.
Your goal is to hit the dragon with any arrow by using the updrafts created by the dragons to paraglide your way higher and higher.
The body part of the dragon you hit will determine which items you receive. The items will fall from the dragon towards the ground, shrouded with a glowing energy. You can only obtain one item at a time and if you want to get another, you’ll have to revisit the dragon’s lair at a later date.
Dragon parts are a great way to earn money by selling them to merchants or to Kilton because they go for a high price. However, mixing them with other food will increase the duration of special effect.
Horn Shard - hit the Horn/crest to get this item. It gives the max amount of bonus duration in elixirs and food.
Fang Shard - Hit the fang/mouth to get this item. It gives a high amount of bonus duration.
Claw - Hit the leg/claw to get a medium amount of bonus duration.
Scale - Hit any part of the rest of the body to get a low amount of bonus duration.
