Unlike the previous Call of Duty games that delivered linear campaign experiences, things are changing up quite dramatically in the upcoming Black Ops Cold War. When speaking of Call of Duty, fans are mostly drawn to the game's multiplayer and Zombies modes, with the campaign receiving less to no love at all. This time around, developer Raven Software is committed to delivering an unparalleled experience in all three domains of the game, and the campaign is going to witness open-ended missions and puzzle-solving.
According to Gamebyte, Raven Software developer Dan Vondrak told Official PlayStation Magazine that Black Ops Cold War's campaign is stepping away from a linear storytelling format. The game will be introducing open-ended missions, dialogue choices, and side-missions, all of which will contribute to how the game's ending turns out.
Although the previous Call of Duty games did involve collectibles and intel scattered across missions, in Black Ops Cold War, however, intel will play a key role in solving puzzles and unlocked side-missions. Failing to collect intel will render some of these side-missions unplayable, shaping the ending of the game. In an effort to erase linearity, the developer went a step ahead to include dialogue choices for certain missions, resulting in alternate endings for missions based on player choice. Additionally, certain assassination missions will offer players various approachable options, giving them multiple ways to take out a target, allowing for more freedom and less linearity.
It seems that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is shaping into a blockbuster of game that longtime CoD fans have been wishing for. Besides the changes to the campaign, the multiplayer has also seen new changes and improvements like larger maps, revamped scorestreaks, and more. The game also received a new teaser for Zombies, confirming the mode's official reveal on September 30.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is releasing on November 13 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
