LAS VEGAS -- Renowned watchmaker Casio has stepped into the smartwatch space with a rugged timepiece for the tech enthusiast hiker. The Japanese company announced the WSD-F10 Smart Outdoor Watch at CES 2016 Tuesday.
Hitting all the points for an all-terrain device, including military grade design and water resistance up to 50 meters, the WSD-F10 sets itself apart from similar watches by running the Android Wear operating system.
This puts on users’ wrists, a multifunctional device that does everything from remind users to rest and drink water to sensing if conditions are sound for activities like fishing or surfing.
We got an up-close look at the WSD-F10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Wednesday. Check out the device in all of its smart and rugged glory.
WSD-F10 is available in color options including black, green, red and orange.
With Android Wear, users get a smartwatch experiences, which includes being able to send and receive calls and texts and receiving notifications from texts, emails and social media. Users also have a range of customization options, including being able to change the watch faces on the WSD-F10.
The WSD-F10 includes a magsafe adapter charger, similar to what is seen on MacBooks. The smartwatch charges from dead to full in about two hours and battery life lasts about one day.
Stock apps on the WSD-F10 include ViewRanger, My Radar and Runkeeper. ViewRanger provides users with route details and navigation siggestions as well as data on altitude, location and the distance between rest points. My Radar shows real-time weather details. Runkeeper tracks routes and progress for users running and cycling.
The WSD-F10 works in tandem with the EX-FR100 outdoor camera, serving as a remote control for the shooter.
Primary activities supported by the WSD-F10 include trekking or hiking, running, cycling or fishing. When hiking, users can set goals and see their hiking progress. The WSD-F10 will also notify users of notable time points such as sunrise or sunset.
The smartwatch includes sensors including pressure sensor, accelerometer, gryometer and a magnetic sensor, which keeps users aware of current atmospheric conditions and changes.
The WSD-F10 is compatible with Android devices running Android 4.3 or later and iOS devices iPhone 5 or later, running iOs 8.2 or later.
The WSD-F10 will sell for about $500 when it launches in the late March/early April timeframe.
