Kirby: Battle Royale thankfully isn't some gritty reboot of the series in the vein of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds or the upcoming Paladins: Battle Royale . It's a whole lot cuter, featuring Nintendo's adorable pink puffball as he brawls with other versions of himself in arena-type combat. It's scheduled for release on Jan. 19, and there's a demo available as of Jan. 4 for Nintendo 3DS. Still, there’s plenty more to see before the full game drops.
Nintendo released a new trailer that demonstrates some of Kirby's copy abilities you'll see in the game, which are a combination of moves culled from several prior titles in the Kirby game catalogue. This new trailer showcases Kirby’s Ice, Spear, Parasol, and Ninja copy abilities, alongside some trivia about each one. For instance, the Parasol ability originally debuted back on Kirby's Adventure for NES and allows Kirby to float through the air as gracefully as you please. It was most recently seen in Kirby Planet Robobot , also a Nintendo 3DS title. Kirby can also jab enemies with it until they're beaten into submission.
Kirby's Ninja ability first showed up in Kirby Super Star back on Super Nintendo, and it lets Kirby throw ninja stars and pull off other useful maneuvers similar to that of a powerful shinobi. It was also most recently seen in Kirby Planet Robobo t on Nintendo 3DS.
The chilly Ice ability was introduced back in Kirby's Adventure for NES. It lets Kirby pull off powerful ice attacks and freeze enemies and also skate across some frozen areas. It also made its most recent appearance in Kirby Planet Robobot .
Lastly, Kirby's Spear ability lets him jab at foes in a powerful manner. This ability was first seen in Kirby's Return to Dreamland , back on the Nintendo Wii. Recently, it was seen in Kirby: Triple Deluxe on 3DS. If you've ever wanted to see Kirby totally annihilate enemies with a flurry of spear lunges, this is the ability for you.
Kirby: Battle Royale will feature a single-player campaign as well as co-op and multiplayer game options. Looking to get reacquainted with Kirby’s abilities? You can give the demo a try now and play the full game later on Jan. 19.
