The CW released four really odd promotions for The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow this week. Each commercial revolves around a character named Bob, just a regular dude who happens to run into each superhero while he’s running errands, grabbing coffee or grilling steak. But most surprising was the latest ‘Super Season’ promo which features Captain Cold.
“Captain Cold is on the loose again following a daring prison break,” a news anchor says as Bob pours a cup of coffee that immediately freezes into ice.
The Legends of Tomorrow panel at San Diego Comic-Con dropped the news Wentworth Miller would return as Captain Cold. The Prison Break star is so loved by fans, it’s no surprise he gets his own commercial. However, this promo is a clear marketing campaign because he’s not a main character by any means. Earlier this year, Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim said he hadn’t even told Miller his character was coming back to the series.
When Captain Cold unexpectedly returned to Legends last year to join Legion of Doom, his appearance dragged out in promotional material and interviews for months even though he didn’t show up until the very end. But after the Legends defeated Legion of Doom, he dropped back off in the 2014 timeline to let the real future (where he sacrifices himself to save the world) play out.
“I think the fact that we killed off Leonard in Season 1, it basically made it incumbent upon us, every time we do bring Wentworth [Miller] back, to do it in a different way,” Guggenheim told Collider about the characters return this season. “We have a really, really cool way of bringing him back this year, but I haven’t even pitched it to the network yet. We’re excited, but we haven’t even had a chance to tell Wentworth.”
After killing Eobard Thawne and destroying the Spear of Destiny’s powers in the Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 finale, White Canary discovers they ‘broke time.’ Considering they are in future Los Angeles with dinosaurs roaming around, Captain Cold coming back doesn’t seem all that impossible.
Legends of Tomorrow returns to The CW Oct. 10. Watch all the ‘Super Season’ commercials below.
