Bungie hosted the second of three planned Destiny: Curse of Osiris preview streams Tuesday morning, shifting its usual recording schedule to accommodate the shortened work week. Our latest sneak peek at the expansion, which hits PC and consoles early next month, was much more focused than the studio’s first Curse of Osiris broadcast.
Destiny Community Manager David “DeeJ” Dague resumed his usual hosting duties, joined by Curse of Osiris Art Director Dave Matthews (not that one) and Game Director Dan Miller. Last week, DeeJ led us on a guided tour of the first Destiny 2 expansion, which included brief looks at everything from new faction armor inspired by the game’s next destination, to the Infinite Forest, an endless series of Vex simulations that provide “infinite realities” to explore. This week, we returned to the Infinite Forest to learn a bit more about the sprawling complex in Mercury’s hollowed core, and learned about a new public event that will be exclusive to Destiny 2 ’s next patrol zone.
Like all public events, Vex Crossroads will include a heroic variant. Bungie didn’t show the trigger for that version on the stream — the studio wants players to figure that out on their own — but we did learn that two treasure chests (instead of the usual one) are waiting for everyone who takes part in a successful event. It’s not clear if the second chest is tied to the heroic trigger, or if we’ll get two either way. Neither would surprise us, given how much longer Crossroads seem to be compared to other public events. The other big change with Curse of Osiris’s new public event is that warp gates will send players to sections of the map that are only accessible during Crossroads events. There’s no word on whether or not players should expect similar destination-exclusive content to appear in the game’s existing patrol zones. But we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
The most exciting revelation from this week’s broadcast, for anyone who’s been hoping Destiny would one day live up to the “Diablo with guns” dream, is that the Infinite Forest will mix and match enemies and environmental assets from all of the franchise’s current factions. The Infinite Forest adventures all still seem to have a very defined look, which keep it from falling a bit short of Diablo 3’s truly excellent Adventure mode, but we’re still getting a bit closer to the functionality fans have hoped for since Destiny 1 debuted back in 2014.
