We finally have more details on the Destiny 2 player bans two Bungie staffers tried to address on Wednesday. The truth fell somewhere between the community’s claims and Bungie’s defense, as is frequently the case when our favorite industry faces issues like this. But the good news is the latest wave of Destiny 2 bans weren’t nearly as far-reaching as it seemed.
Earlier this week, hundreds of Destiny 2 players reported having their accounts locked for reasons that weren’t clear at the time. Many were under the impression that third-party software was the primary culprit, despite Bungie’s prior promises not to pass out bans over Discord (and other apps), but the studio says that (mostly) isn’t the case.
According to a new blog post, Bungie banned around 400 Destiny 2 PC players on Tuesday. The vast majority weren’t punished for using unrelated third-party software. The studio says most of those banned this week were locked out for “using tools that pose a threat to the shared ecosystem of the game.” A plethora of popular PC applications still aren’t compatible with Destiny 2, and might even prevent the game from opening, but they still won’t net you a ban. Most of the time.
“As part of our ban review process, we have identified a group of players who were banned in error. Those players have been unbanned,” Bungie wrote. “The bans were not related to the third-party applications listed above. We will continue to review the process we use to ensure a fun and fair game.”
Bungie also confirmed all bans are reviewed manually. Software might force a disconnect but access isn’t revoked until a member of the Destiny 2 team confirms punishment is warranted. The team also said it would overturn four bans handed down during the closed beta.
