DOTA 2 players are having the best week ever. The International, the end of the year eSports tournament that pits the best teams DOTA 2 has to offer against each other, has been going on this week and it’s been epic. From amazing games like the nail biter that was Evil Geniuses vs. Ehome , to some of the strangest casting I’ve ever seen at an eSports events , TI 2016 truly has it all.
If that wasn’t enough, Valve also decided to unveil two brand new heroes for DOTA 2. The only original DOTA hero from the Warcraft 3 mod, Pit Lord has finally been added to the original’s successor. This time around, he’s called Underlord and players got their first look at him in the All-Star event . We already have an idea what Underlord’s abilities might be – players were able to do some digging in the source code and find what he does. Keep in mind that all of this can change before Underlord becomes playable on August 23.
If that wasn’t enough, Valve had one more sneaky trick up its sleeve. Out of nowhere, the company revealed yet another hero called the Monkey King. It’s essentially Sun Wukong from Chinese folklore and the famous novel Journey To The West. Now League of Legends, Smite and DOTA 2 all have champions based on the same character. From the trailer, we can see that the Monkey King can create duplicates of himself and jump around the map. He will be coming out in the Fall.
I’m not a big fan of DOTA 2 , but even I can understand why these hero reveals are such a big deal. Valve has been silent on new heroes for their game for months now, with some worried that DOTA wasn’t going to get any new playable heroes. Now those fears are far behind us and we can all get excited to play these new heroes.
