The classic Dragon Quest series will be released to the Nintendo Switch on September 27. We say series because the release includes the whole Erdrick trilogy. This means everyone gets the chance to play Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line, and Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation.
When Dragon Quest was released back in 1986, it accumulated a fanbase of millions that was incredibly passionate. There was no question that it became a cultural phenomenon. Dragon Quest also set the standard for what would become the RPG genre. The upcoming release continues to have intuitive and simple controls that imitate retro gameplay. This new collection also honors where the legacy began.
The first trilogy focuses on the legend of Erdrick. In Dragon Quest, players start their journey simply known as the "Hero," a descendant of none other than Erdrick. While the second part was released a year later, the story jumps a hundred years into the future. In order to defeat the menace that is Hargon, the young prince of Midenhall starts a quest to find the other two descendants of the legendary hero Erdrick. The third game in the series was released in 1998 and here players need to travel across Aliahan. A young hero has been given the task of defeating none other than the master of darkness, Baramos.
Dragon Quest is priced at at $4.99, with Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line priced at $6.49, and Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation priced at $12.49.
Since the release of the original trilogy, a total of 11 games have been published. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age was released worldwide for the PlayStation 4 and PC in September 2018. A version for the Nintendo Switch is set to be released this month titled Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition. Dragon Quest XI follow the gameplay of previous games in the series. The latest incarnation has players explore worlds and fight against various monsters. Similar to Dragon Quest IX, the battle system of the game features no random encounters and reveals all enemies on the overworld.
The game has received "generally favorable reviews" with many critics saying that it was the best in the series.
