One of the things that make real-time strategy games fun is playing against other players. It’s a way to show opponents just how good you are for that faction or group. That said, the multiplayer function for Dune: Spice Wars is now available and is a good test if you have what it takes to rule Arrakis.
Players can now go 2v2 and compete to control the spice. Not into team play? Not to worry since the game’s multiplayer feature also offers free-for-all for up to four players.
Before we continue, you can watch the trailer below:
In multiplayer, players can choose between Atreides, Harkonnen, Fremen, and Smugglers. Each match allows for a maximum of four players and if there are open spots, they'll be filled with AI-controlled factions with difficulty ranging from easy and all the way to insane.
New Update
The new multiplayer function arrives in the game courtesy of a new update. That same update also introduces the reworks for the development trees, giving focus on the synergy between factions.
Here are some of the changes:
- Balance and tweaks of almost everything
- Rework of Harkonnen units
- Rework of the Wreckers
- Rework of the militia aggro system
- Improved AIs
- Faction limit for Fremen Sietches’ buildings
- Charters can now have flexible eligibility during deciding and voting phases
- Eliminated factions during decide and voting phase now properly get removed
- Removed spice freighters
The update also adds new political resolutions, events, and regions. Plus, new Underworld Headquarter buildings and new building illustrations.
Roadmap
The multiplayer function was first announced last May during the reveal of the early access roadmap. The next update is expected to introduce a new playable faction along with a new victory condition. Though it hasn't been revealed, fans of the previous Dune game are guessing it could either be House Ordos or House Corrino.
Other new content that players can look forward to includes spaceports, ships, and other advanced units. Councilors are going to be added later as well and they function as special agents or fighting units having unique abilities.
Dune: Spice Wars is available on Steam, currently offered at 20% off.
