It’s almost 2018 and Dying Light is getting a new expansion.
Techland’s parkour-infused spiritual successor to Dead Island originally debuted way back in January 2015. The game was incredibly popular: Steam says 92 percent of the 34,000-plus reviews it’s received on the platform are positive, and the studio supported Dying Light with more than half a dozen expansions. It’s been two years since the last one, The Following, made its PC and console debut, leading most to believe Techland was working on a sequel (or some other project). But the studio has confirmed at least one more add-on, a standalone PvP expansion inspired by the likes of PUBG and Fortnite, is on the way.
Details on Dying Light: Bad Blood are scarce. Techland hasn’t released a trailer yet, or said much about how gameplay will change. We know Bad Blood’s focus will be competition. The player count will be much smaller, with seven people fighting for survival (instead of 100), and the next Dying Light DLC will combine PvP and PvE elements to put a unique twist on battle royale shooters. Other than that, all we know is that everyone will be racing to escape an infested map before nightfall and you’ll have to scavenge for weapons and other supplies along the way. You’ll also have to “harvest” blood from the infected “to pay for a seat on the extraction chopper.” Parkour will presumably continue to play a major role, given the popularity of those mechanics, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Techland is currently accepting applications for a global playtest of Bad Blood, which won’t cost a dime, but the studio doesn’t offer a timeline (other than “soon”) for that testing on the official website. We’d be willing to wager that it’s January at the earliest. Many studios run on skeleton crews during the holiday and we don’t tend to see many big releases during the latter half of December. That said, if you’re interested in the next Dying Light expansion, you might as well register for the Bad Blood playtest before you forget.
Dying Light is currently available on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Bad Blood debuts sometime in 2018.
